Love is, when your love still tells stories generations later ....
Sitting here at the San Antonio River Walk thinking about my Great-Great Grandmother Carolina Rodriguez Gonzales (My grandfather- Edward Rey Lopez' Maternal Grandmother).
She was born here in San Antonio, TX in 1869.
I wonder if she walked the same streets I have today. What did she think about this weather in July? Did she meet my great-great grandfather here? Did she ever want to dip her feet in the river?
How did she feel about all the changes that were happening to her country? Was she afraid of what was to become? How did her parents feel about Texas being annexed to the U.S.? Did she have any relatives that fought in the Alamo?
Most importantly, where did her 1st crush live? Was it Timoteo?
Carolina married my Great-Great Grandfather Timoteo Ortegon Gonzales who was born in Brownsville, TX in 1870(see a similar connection to my Chamberlain-Fernandez side?)
Texas was a very different place back then.
Think of things in terms of historical aspects:
Texas became a Republic in 1836, that was just 30 years before they were born.
Texas was annexed to the U.S. in 1861 that was just 9 years before they were born.
The Civil War ended in 1865 - 5 years before they were Born.
Juneteenth was in 1866, that was 3-4 years before they were born.
They are my great-great grandparents. See how close and not so far away history is?
So, when people say "that was hundreds of years ago.." well, technically but through family
stories of lived experiences that are passed down by our elders, it was just yesterday.
Oh ya, the elote at Cafe Ole was delish!
Carolina, what stories do you have to tell?
